Cantores in Ecclesia returns to St. Philip Neri Church this spring for a special Palm Sunday concert on the afternoon of April 2, featuring the complete Lamentations of Tomás Luis de Victoria (c. 1548-1611.) Victoria’s Lamentations are among the great choral works of their era. They are a musical interplay of light and shadow that recalls the painters and mystics of the Spanish Renaissance, with whom Victoria had a great affinity. This music is traditionally sung at the services of Tenebrae during the last days before Easter, where candles are extinguished one by one until the choir is left singing in complete darkness.
